Stainless Steel 309S Pipes is austenitic steel possessing a minimum of 18 % chromium and 8 % nickel, combined with a maximum of 0.08 % carbon. Stainless Steel 309S Tubes is nonmagnetic steel which cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but instead must be cold worked to obtain higher tensile strengths. SS 309S Pipes often eliminate the necessity of annealing weldments except for applications specifying stress relief.

SS 309S Tubes have slightly lower mechanical properties than SS 304 Tubes. Thin strip sections may be air cooled in Grade 309S Pipes, but heavy sections should be water quenched to minimize exposure in the carbide precipitation region. Grade 309S Tubes are non-hardenable by heat treatment, where annealing should be done up to 1900 Degree F – 2050 Degree F (1038 Degree C – 1121 Degree C), and then cool rapidly. To relieve stresses produced in severe forming or spinning, parts of Steel 309S Pipes should be full annealed or stress relief annealed as soon as possible after forming. Alloy 309S Tubes can withstand much more time and abuse before showing signs of wear.
